SPIRIT OF BAHÁ

A Music Initative Inspired by the Bahá'í Faith

Welcome!

Welcome friends!

My name is Sarah Mohebiany, and I have recently started a music initiative called

“Spirit of Bahá”. I am in an ongoing process of reflecting - and taking action - on how I can contribute some of my own artistic talents to my community, while reflecting on the themes and principles that are within the Sacred Writings and prayers of the Bahá’í Faith. I decided I would like to invite growing numbers of friends to join me in learning together how we can make a difference to the spirit and upliftment of our communities through music.

I am a multi-instrumentalist of the violin/piano/ukulele/guitar, composer and singer-songwriter, and music teacher, among many other things. I would like to invite you to be a musician and singer along with me, for us to enjoy learning music together, and hopefully even create new music together in future possible sessions, for the upliftment of our own hearts and the spirits of everyone whose path you cross.

“Spirit of Bahá” is the name I gave to my Bahá’í-inspired music initiative, because I wanted to have the name of this initiative to focus on the uplifting “spirit” that music gives us, and to also make reference to the Bahá’í Faith by using the name “Bahá”, which means “Splendour” and is also the name given to the first month of the Bahá’í calendar.

There are many very beautiful references in the Bahá’í Faith about the important role of the arts/ music, which I encourage you to seek out and reflect on, to inspire you further. Here is one such passage:

“I rejoice to hear that thou takest pains with thine art, for in this wonderful new age, art is worship. The more thou strivest to perfect it, the closer wilt thou come to God. What bestowal could be greater than this, that one’s art should be even as the act of worshipping the Lord? That is to say, when thy fingers grasp the paintbrush, it is as if thou wert at prayer in the Temple.” (From the Writings of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Translated from the Persian.)

On this page, you will find songsheets I am using in community music teaching sessions for music melodies I have composed set to the Writings and prayers of the Bahá'í Faith.
